I have spent 5 years looking for a “Gothic” classical symphony played with drums, dungun long horn, violin….?
It was the most horrifyingly dark classical music ever. Deep melody of “Tibetan horn, dungun horn” or fog horns that that boomed with big drums and sighed with violins. I think it was russian? please help me find it.
I have no better idea than you, but…. any of the following could, or couldn’t be it.
if these aren’t right you still might like them.
I’ve neither heard or looked at the score of #1, so I plead immunity in referring you to it.
There is only one technically ‘classical’ work I know of with the word ‘Gothic’ attached.
1.) Havergal Brian: Symphony No. 1 in D minor “The Gothic.” (irony of ironies)
It is an early 20th century piece of epic scope, proportions and duration, holding a record in the Guiness book for number of instruments, choirs, offstage brass sections, etc. lots and lots of performers involved.
2.) Philip Glass: Kundun
Glass is a cross category classical / alternate / minimalist composer who also does film scores. Kundun is a film score which incorporates Bhuddist chant, Tibetan horns and western ‘classical’ instruments. maybe he wrote something else using similar forces. He is known for hypnotically (or numbingly) repetiive music, depending on your point of view.
3.) Toshiro Mayuzumi: Nirvana Symphony.
A modern-contemporary Japanese composer (deceased), this piece is from about 1960, is for large symphony orchestra, with a male chorus deeply intoning Buddhist chant. I haven’t heard it for years, remember being impressed with the quality of the composing, its drama, was moved, and thought it all rather beautiful. (those subjective reactions and descriptions again.)
If you’re open to other new music, I really think you might like these two.
Ingram Marshall: Fog Tropes, on a CD titled American Elegies. assorted elegaic modern and contemporary pieces conducted by the composer John Adams.
John Adams: Dharma at Big Sur (brief excerpt on youtube) lighten up, check it out, large orchestra, lotta percussion, Electric Violin Soloist.
FYI: ‘us’ classical users get a bit weary of being asked if ‘Bella’s Lullaby’ is classical, etc. I first avoided this Q because of ‘Gothic.’
If you get no joy from this answer you might want to re-post your question without the word ‘Gothic’ in it.
Please let me know if you ever find the actual piece you are seekiing. You’ve made me curious as to what it is.
Best, Petr B.
